Greece means sea, beaches, sunsets, history, fun ... and good food. This country offers many traditional recipes with an intense flavor and aroma, dishes with an enveloping taste, prepared with local, simple and typical ingredients of the Mediterranean cuisine which it is impossible to resist. For those who have already been in Greece and want to feel at home; for those who are organizing their vacation and are curious to know what you can taste: here are some Greek recipes not to be missed, the most famous ones, to try at least once in your life.

Tzatziki: it is a basic preparation, which can be served as an appetizer or as an accompanying sauce. Being a traditional recipe, there are many variations: in all cases the main and recurring ingredient is the Greek colato yogurt, also of sheep or goat to give a more intense flavor. Tzatziki can be flavored as desired with various herbs or spices, such as mint, dill or paprika and served with black olives. The number of cloves of garlic in the recipe is indicative and depends on personal tastes: more cloves are added and more sauce will be spicy and intense.

Greek salad: based on cheese, even this famous salad has now conquered the world and the menus of restaurants also not specialized in Greek cuisine. The secret of his success? It is a fresh dish, light but tasty and very quick to prepare. Olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, feta, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, few ingredients that make the difference.

Dolmades: what is more Mediterranean than the vine? And with this plant not only the wine is produced but also the appetizing rolls stuffed with rice, onions and mint. The leaves of the vine can be eaten and are very good, try to believe it. Usually dolmades are proposed as an appetizer and there are also more substantial variations of meat.

Saganaki: looks like the name of a Japanese dish and instead is a typical delicious Greek recipe, or fried cheese. They can be offered as an appetizer or as a main course and are usually made with sheep's milk, a very common ingredient in these areas. The name derives from the pan used to cook this specialty. If you like cheese, in Greece you will be satisfied because in addition to the famous feta, there are many other products prepared especially with sheep's milk and goat's milk, but there is also the Kefalograviera made with cow's milk.

Pita: bread in Greece is called pita. It is a very simple product based on olive oil, flat and low, also common in other Mediterranean regions. You can use it to accompany the Greek salad or typical sauces such as tzatziki or to fill a very popular and popular sandwich in Greece called Pita Gyros. Gyros is a Greek recipe similar to kebab but prepared with marinated pork and slowly cooked on a spit.

Souvlaki: we are talking about meat, a raw material traditionally used in Greece despite this country being surrounded on three sides by the sea. To accompany the pita you can also find the souvlaki, grilled pork loin and then served in the skewer or inside a sandwich with tzatziki sauce, tomatoes and onions.

Lamb meatballs: in Greece the lamb is not eaten only at Easter but rather is a very common ingredient in various dishes. By any means do not miss the meatballs, flavored with mint, proposed as street food or as a main course, accompanied by salad and the inevitable tzatziki sauce.

Baklava: we end our journey among the Greek recipes with a sweet one. Just as popular as in the Middle East, also in Greece you will find two common ingredients: honey and filo pastry or puff pastry, used both for savory pies (delicious spinach and feta cake, spanakotipa) and for traditional pastries. These two foods are mixed in the Greek dessert par excellence, baklava. Between two sheets of dough is enclosed a crunchy filling made with dried fruit, covered in honey syrup. It seems that already in Ancient Greece there was the tradition of preparing desserts with honey and sesame on the occasion of the feasts dedicated to the god Dionysus.
